Howdy! Long time no blog.
I started this blog when I studied abroad in France in 2019 to share what I was up to with people back home. Now in 2022, I’m reviving it for the same purpose, only this time, I am travelling to France as a teacher, not a student.
I accepted a position at Lycée Edouard Herriot, a high school in the heart of Lyon. I am working via a government program called TAPIF which places qualified foreigners as foreign language teachers around the Francophone world. I could have been placed anywhere — Réunion, Martinique, Marseille, etc. It was a total crapshoot. I ended up in Lyon, the gastronomical capital of France (and some argue of all of Europe). I’ll be living a stone’s throw from Michelin-starred restaurants, Revolution-era civil buildings, world-class museums, and a Roman amphitheater.
As you might imagine, rent is sky-high and food ain’t cheap either. So, for the first time ever, I am accepting tips and donations via Kofi, which is linked at the top of the homepage. In order to justify any tips I receive, I will be holding to a strict schedule of posting at least once a week. You can tip however much or little you think this blogging merits, and at no point will I put anything behind a paywall.
I am going to keep this blog school-friendly, but I am not going to avoid the strange, uncomfortable, or uncouth. I want to present a truthful account of living and working in France. I hope it’s enlightening, or at least entertaining. In the coming weeks I’m going to make some posts about the state-side process so far, which has been a unending hellscape of sound and fury. Shoot me a message if you have any specific questions.
Plane leaves September 25th!
Allison, this sounds like an exceptional opportunity for you! I’m so excited about following you and your new adventures! David and I are former church friends with Bill and Lavon, and your mom and I go way back in friendship! We eagerly followed your previous blog and will look forward to your new posts.
(Be safe; the mother in me worried about you previously as you took off on some of your solo field trips!) Mothers, you know how we are…😊
Blessings, Pat Boshears
